My latest trip to Iceland I did this summer was awesome. No, wait. I am mistaking something here. Not awesome, but AWESOME. I finally got to see my very close friend I met during my studies in Denmark and managed to see a lot places as well. Nature in Iceland is indeed mind-blowing and makes you wanna pinch yourself and wonder if this, what you see, is actually real and happening to you.
However, I spent there one week. In the beginning my plan was to do the whole ring road, but because of the lack of the time and my friend’s work schedule it wasn’t that easily possible to arrange, therefore I started to search for opportunities how to manage to see as much as possible by not spending loads of time.
After spending couple of hours on Google and Google Maps I came up with a solution which was favourable for all parties. We rented a car for a period of 5 days and my first 2 days in Iceland I spent by traveling alone and discovering places in the South. This included Hveragerði, Selfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Skogafoss, Dyrhólaey, Reynisfara Beach, Vík, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Skaftafell glacier, Hofskirkja and Diamond Beach as the last stop. (See the map below, all of them are written in order.)
Yes, it is a lot to see in two days and yes, it was a lot of driving, especially for one person. But in summer period in Iceland there are plenty of hitchhiker to accompany you during your ride.
After my trip to the South side of Iceland me and my friend took a 3 day trip to see other places. In our first day we went to the Snæfellsnes peninsula and saw such places as Sjavarfoss, Glymur, Borgarnes, Landbrotalaug, Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, Gatklettur in Arnarstapi, Hellnar, Londrangar, Ólafsvík, Kirkjufell and Stykkishólmur.
Our next 2 days we spent by visiting Westfjords of Iceland. In the beginning we planned to see everything of Westfjords, but as it ‘turned out’ Westfjords are huge and the road there was very difficult to drive. However, we saw Reykhólar, Hellulaug hot pot, Rauðasandur Beach, Latrabjarg, Patreksfjörður, Dynjandi waterfall and spent the rest of the day back in Hellulaug hot pot.
When I arrived back in the Reykjavik, I took an extra trip to see Golden Circle and also finally spent some time discovering Reykjavik itself and actually realised that both of them I should have seen as first, because Golden Circle and Reykjavik describes and gives better impression of Iceland and culture there the best.
However, this trip was great, super busy, fun and beautiful. I hope this is somehow inspiring and helpful for you if you are willing to visit Iceland someday! Feel free to contact me or leave me a comment if you have any questions.
